Prom 3.0

Monday, April 2, 2012 § 0

Let me just get this out in the open: I don't harp on life in high school.  I don't miss the crowded halls, the classes, the cafeteria, the TAKS test, or the assemblies.   However, now that prom season is coming up for the wee juniors and seniors, I think back to when I was going to prom.

Sometimes I regret that yellow dress, even though now that I look back on it, it is pretty damn classy.  The only thing I wish I had done is this: worn a different sash, and put my hair in a low bun.

As for the blue dress, that was my favorite dress in the whole world.  However, it wasn't perfect: the people that were supposed to alter it for me did it wrong and therefore, it almost didn't fit me at all.  My dad fixed it with a ribbon in the back, but the dress still pinched and prodded and HURT.  Also, I had strep that night, which sucked.  Otherwise, that dress was perfect.

I was thinking about it, and going through one of my fave vintage dress websites, and I was wondering how much my style has changed within the year.  I was wondering, to get to my point, what I would wear if I could do prom again, this year.  Here's what I've come up with!

Emma Domb Baby Pink Prom Dress (Unique-vintage.com)

It's pink.  It's lace.  It's vintage-inspired.  In other words, it's absolutely gorgeous.  Can you just imagine this thing floating across the dance floor to something slow, while a preppie in a varsity jacket holds you tight in his arms? Because I can.  I LAHV IT.

Dress Gallery Jade Long Dress (Asos.com)
Ohmygodthisdress.  It's magnificent.  First of all, those flutter sleeves: the perfect addition to this form-fitting beaut.  And then there's the enormous cutout in the back (sorry, don't have a picture of that) that keeps the dress from being too conservative.  And to top it all off, it's velvet.  Don't roll your eyes at me, young lady..I know most of you guys wouldn't touch velvet with a 39 and a half foot pole, but I don't see anything wrong with it.  It's elegant. It's comfortable.  AND THIS DRESS IS DAMN BEAUTIFUL.

Faviana Embellished One-shoulder Gown (Nordstrom.com)
I love this dress because it reminds me of Drew Barrymore's golden globes gown from way back when.  I LOVE beige for gowns because it always looks so classic and fresh at the same time.  I also adore the way this model is styled: bright pink lips, low, messy chignon, and no jewelery.  You don't need it with a dress like this, honestly.

Badgley Mischka Platinum Label (Bluefly.com)

This is one of those dresses that just catches your eye immediately.  As you probably can already see, I love ruffles (see blue prom dress above) and this dress is so fun and fresh and yet elegant at the same time.  I see a braided updo with this baby.

And if the world were a just and kind place, and money rained from the heavens and into my wallet, then I would wear Valentino to the prom.

Oh, goodness, what a dream.

I don't regret the dresses I wore, since I had so much fun in them.  Sometimes, though, I just wish I could do prom all over again since I feel like my style has changed so much.

Good luck to all the prom-goers this year and have a blast with your friends- that's honestly all that matters!

Arrivederci,
Madi

Prom 2011 from Madison Scruggs on Vimeo.

Here's a video of my prom pictures. I had such a great time with my friends, and there's the red sash in action! It was a fantastic night and I have so many great memories of it :)

The year is flying by. Sheesh.

Song is 'The Thoughts That Give Me the Creeps' by HelloGoodbye. I thought it was fitting since I couldn't imagine not knowing these people.

All hair and makeup done by Molly at Clothes Encounters (sister's blog!).

prom countdown

Thursday, May 5, 2011 § 0

I'm so excited.  Prom is this Saturday, and I finally got my sash done (my dad actually ended up sewing it for me- it was really hard to get the tulle flowers on there!).  I'm not going to show you my dress on me until the day, but here's a sneak peek at some of my accessories:

That's handcrafted magic right there, baby.  Many thanks to my dad, who sewed the flowers on by hand for me while I pretended to help.  Yeah, I just sat there.

Hopefully these don't hurt.

I think my sister and I decided to go with a french-braid headband for the hairstyle, but we'll see.

Happy Thursday,
Cooper

Sweater: Target
V-neck: Old Navy
Shorts: Etsy

I finally wore those Etsy shorts that I thought were too big (and they are, sort of) and tried to work with them.  And it was actually nice! They were so comfortable (given the fact that they weren't squeezing the life out of me) and it was perfect for a sunny day like today.

Weird updates:

1. I'm nominated for Best Dressed at my school.  Weird. But awesome! So if you go to my school, vote for me! And if you don't, just keep reading as if you never read this snippet of info!

2. I'm getting a spray tan on Friday for prom.  I'm nervous.  I have this image in my head of me coming out of the booth looking like Anne Hathaway in Bride Wars:

Let's hope everything goes swimmingly.

So long,
Cooper

Maiden braids and DAY 15- halfway through!

Monday, April 4, 2011 § 0

1. Maiden braids.  Here's how they are supposed to look:

And here's how mine look:

So not a complete fail, if you don't count my visible part, the bobby pins sticking out, and the flyaways everywhere.  I think I'll be trying this again!  Thanks to Kitty Clotheshorse for putting this tutorial up on her blog for all to try!

Now, Day 15: 'Put your iPod on shuffle and write down the first 10 songs that come up.'  Done and done:

1. Slow Night, So Long- Kings of Leon

2. Do You Know Who I Am- Echo and the Bunnymen

3. Kiss With A Fist- Florence and the Machine

4. Mary Jo- Belle and Sebastian

5. The Thoughts That Give Me the Creeps- HelloGoodbye

6. Heart of Stone- The Raveonettes

7. The Spectator- The Bravery

8. Nature Boy- David Bowie

9. Holdin' On Together- Phoenix

10. New In Town- Little Boots

I was really hoping that the Moulin Rouge soundtrack would sneak its way in there, and it did!  Thank ya, iPod!  I have to admit, I haven't yet listened to the Raveonettes or Belle and Sebastian, I just put it on my iPod.  I plan to ASAP!

Another update on my terribly interesting day-to-day: I plan on getting SUPA FIT for prom (no Madonna arms; more like Jessica Biel arms) and therefore I am eating healthier and working out erryday on the treadmill for 30 minutes.  I'm calling it:
Even though it's not really a challenge.  I don't want to lose a set amount of pounds or anything.  I just want to look FOINE

I worked out on the treadmill every day after school my sophomore year of high school, and I lost a ton of weight.  I think I'll tone up if I do the same thing this year, because a little thing I like to call FLAB is taking over my body.

Wish me luck!
Happy Monday,

My 2011 Prom Dress/ A prom horror story.

Saturday, March 5, 2011 § 0

<--The fabric, sash, cut, and inspiration for this year's gown.

My mother won't like that I'm doing this, but I've decided to share with you all what I'm wearing to Prom this year.
The designer is Candace at IconicStyles on Etsy.com, and she has so many styles and cuts that it was difficult to choose! However, this year, I wanted to be comfortable, and this simple style makes that an easy option. I like it because first of all, I've always wanted to wear yellow. Candace had so many fabric options and the colors I had narrowed down to were light blue, a champagne/nude color, pink, or dark red. I almost picked nude but my mother assured me that with my skin tone, I would look naked. Blech.
The best part is: she's custom making it for me! It's already nerve-racking buying a dress online that you've never seen before, but I guess a consolation is that I know it will fit. That is, if I did my measurements right.
The whole paranoia with being comfortable comes from last year's beaut, a gorgeous confection I got from a vintage shop in Denton where my sister goes to college:

It was a little small on me when I tried it, but the owners assured me that they would make it fit by making a little triangle cutout in the back (which sounded really cute). So we said yes to the dress and left it in their capable hands....or so we thought.

I returned for a fitting, and the owner couldn't find the dress. When she finally did, all the pins had been taken out because someone had come in and tried it on. Tried it on??? This was my dress! I had paid for it already! Why were other people trying it on??
They re-pinned it, not remembering the triangle cutout we had previously discussed but trying something new. I stupidly agreed to their new idea.

When I returned for my third fitting, the cutout was not a cute triangle thing like we had talked about, but a big gaping hole that just looked like maybe I couldn't zip it up all the way. They asked if it was okay, and by that time I just wanted them to stop messing it up and decided to take things into my own hands. I brought the dress home.

My parents had the wonderful idea to get some ribbon from the hobby store and design our own back. My dad, sewer extraordinaire, attached the pieces so the back ended up looking like this:

Which was ten times better than before. The only problem was the clasp in the back had to be closed in order for it to look right, and it squeezed on my belly to no end.

The end result was much better, just incredibly tight. My date (one of my best friends, dressed in a velvet blue tux from the same shop) and I jetted off to prom with the bestie and her friend-date and we had a lovely time.

This year, with a custom dress, I hope the results will be better than last year and I'll have more success with the dress. I'm excited to see how it turns out!

RULES WHEN YOU'RE SHOPPING FOR A PROM DRESS: Don't be afraid to be assertive about what you want. If something's not right, confront the owner or designer instead of letting them walk all over you. This is what I have learned!!!

Happy shopping,
Cooper

I need to count how many outfits I've done so far.

Thursday, February 17, 2011 § 0

Well, it's Thursday, and here it is:
I call this the 'leftover' outfit. I had this crazy ambitious outfit on this morning, but when I came downstairs the mamas shot it down. Of course, I take everything she says about what I wear to heart, and changed with the speed of light before heading out. I should have just gone for it, but there's always next week, right?

Today was one of those weird days. I just feel like I wasn't myself today. I made tons of mistakes and made people angry and made myself angry and absorbed people's emotions like a sponge. It's just....one of those days.
Oh, well. My leftover outfit was nice, I think. I don't even care that I wore the same scarf two days in a row!

Had a productive workday today, as you can see:

Diet Coke makes the world go 'round.

Something fun that happened today:

My best friend's boyfriend hatched a master plan to ask her to prom, enlisting me as the photographer.  He waltzed into our Government class with guys playing love songs on an ipod speaker and a handful of balloons, dressed to the nines.  This is a picture of him asking, and her saying yes!

They're the sweetest.
