Going home for the weekend.

Thursday, November 1, 2012 § 0

Something I've struggled with a lot as a college student is the notion of going home for the weekend.  Social cues and media examples always show how teenagers are supposed to hate their parents and, once they fly the coop, never want to come home again.  This, I say, is ridiculous.

I love my parents.  My sister is my best friend.  This is why last year, when I spent over three months at a time away from the people that I loved the most (I was in Colorado for school, my family in Texas- such is the life for any out-of-state student) it was a wake-up call for me, but a much needed one.  I learned how to live by myself and I made a few close friends and basically, just kept myself busy.  I got a job at the newspaper.  I got involved around campus.  I learned to love my school.

Now, though, it's so much different.  My parents are here, and the friends I choose to spend time with these days are few and far between (don't pity me- I'm not spending my nights curled up on my bed alone, crying myself to sleep out of loneliness.  I've got my people but just not as many as I would prefer).  My weekends are a little bare, so lately, I've been taking the 2 hour trip between FoCo and Parker and using the weekends to spend time with my family.

I do this a lot, and one weekend, it really got to me.  I stayed in my apartment and when my mom urged me to come spend the day with her and the family just for a Sunday, I felt wrong.  I looked back on all the interactions I'd ever had with friends where they mentioned how terrible it was to constantly head home on the weekends, and what was 'normal' and 'right' and 'good'.  Needless to say, I got in my own head.

This weekend, I may stay and I may go, the choice is kind of up in the air.  But the fact of the matter is- I realized that the only person who really cares how often I go home on the weekends or not is me.  I need to stop judging myself for things that, in the end, don't really matter at all.  So I want to spent time with my family.  Big whoop.  I may be lame and the most nontraditional college student in the world for that reason but honestly, I don't really care.

This uncaring attitude of mine may not last for long and I may go back to my old ways of constantly self-judging, but the fact of the matter is is that right now I need to realize that nothing in today's society should be considered 'normal' or 'right'.  Everyone is different and no one has the exact same college experience.  Some people go home on the weekends, and some people party until their brain hurts.

And you know what? I'm going to do both.

Trying to get my life together.

Between balancing a video blog for my school newspaper, moving into my new apartment, packing for said apartment, and moving my sister to Colorado, it's been awfully hard to vlog lately.

I will tell you, it's been quite an eventful few weeks and I guarantee that the upcoming weeks will be just as stressful.  But stressful in a good way, if that makes any sense at all.  Stressful busy, stressful accomplished, stressful independent.

The only bad part of these last few weeks has been my lovable junk-heap of a car.  It was my first car, a lovely old 1990 Volvo, and I've had it for the past 3 years, driving it between states and to school and with my windows down with music blaring and up and fogging with the cold.  It's been good to me.

That is, except for lately.  It's been smelling of gas every time I drive it and last week, when I was nearly in the middle of an intersection, it shut off without any sort of warning, leaving me stranded in a turn lane.  This scares me, if you can imagine, mostly because my dad looked it over and thought he fixed the problem but the uncertainty carries between us both.

So, we thought it was fine, for now.  Then today, I try to turn it on and I discover the battery is flat dead.  No lights were left on, nothing was plugged in where it shouldn't have been, nada.  A mystery.  And this is the second time it's died in two weeks.

I'm nervous because if I get a job that's not walking distance from my apartment this semester, I'm going to have a big need for a car.  Especially since my parents live two hours away from campus and I tend to like to drive down to visit them.

UGH.  This car.  So lovable but so unreliable.

I'm having some trouble blogging right now.

First, a week of finals.
Now, a week of moving into our new house.  CRAZINESS.

I haven't even posted my latest vlog yet, y'all.  I'm crazy behind.
On the upside, I got good enough grades to keep my scholarship! YIPEEEEEE!

FRIDAY FRIDAY

Friday, April 20, 2012 § 0

Do people still sing that on Fridays?  No? Okay, then.

Well, my Friday is turning out to be very enjoyable indeed so far.  I am about to head over to Spoons with my roomie (apparently, it's amazing, and I've never been there before soooo...yeah).  Also, I was freaking out about registering for classes today, but I got EVERY CLASS I WANTED the minute I put their codes in.  At the times I wanted, too.  Insane.  This never happens.

So now I'm sitting here in the LSC trying to be casual and also take a picture of myself because I feel pretty today.  That's the reason for my weird, stoic face...there's someone sitting right next to me and I don't want them to know I'm taking a picture.  Don't normal people stare at their computer screen while also smiling when they're on Facebook?  I know I do ;)

So, I'm leaving early tomorrow morning to head home to the apartment and see the mamas and the papas.  We have a quickie showing of the gorgeous house my dad put an offer on...if all goes well, we want to be able to see the house we'll be living in for the next while!!!

I hope you have a lovely, well-deserved weekend, followers!

Fort Collins Music Experience

Saturday, April 14, 2012 § 0

The Fort Collins Music Experience is a beautiful thing.

I almost wasn't going to go.  My roommate invited me along and I wasn't really sure because the tickets were $20, and also I'd had a stressful week and vegging out in my dorm seemed like a really excellent alternative.

And then I realized that I ALWAYS veg out in my dorm and that I needed to get out and do something with my life.

So I went!

You, Me, and Apollo- such a great band!

The Heyday!

PURE SEX

And You, Me, and Apollo again.  Such a great time.

Basically what happens is that Old Town Fort Collins becomes this music hub for two days, and 300+ bands come and play at different venues all over the city.  Me, the roomie, and some of her friends basically just hopped from place to place and caught about 4 or 5 bands last night.  It was so great.

Stay tuned- the festival continues for today and we're going to see what kind of bands we can discover tonight.

Have a lovely evening,
Madi

Pride and Prejudice.

Ooh-wee child.  You know what's up.

I just wanted to post that becuase I've been thinking of this movie ALL WEEK and about how much I want to watch it.  I consider that a valid reward for this long, long, long week.  Seriously, it's been ca-rawling.

Some good news over here- we got an offer on our house.  FINALLY.  Let's hope it all works out!

We're going house hunting this weekend, because my mom gets into town tomorrow!  This only means one thing:
PARTAY TIME

Is it sad that I'm partying with my parents?  Is it more sad that our idea of partying is a pint of ice cream and watching a movie in our pajamas?

I am not a college kid, fyi.

So long.

So long, Texas.

Saturday, February 4, 2012 § 2

So, after a long, long (long) decision process, my parents have finally decided to move to Colorado.  There's a company down here that my dad really likes, plus, they've always wanted to experience a climate that's better than the hot, humid, stifling air of Texas.  I haven't told nearly anyone...we weren't 100% positive that the move was actually going to happen and we didn't want to get our hopes up.

I'm so excited.  First of all, this means that they'll be living less than an hour away from where I go to school.  There's the possibility of me paying in-state tuition after a while, and I won't have to wait until breaks from school to go down and visit (and I won't have to fly anymore, blech).  I finally get to ease their stress a little and help them with the moving process, because I haven't been able to do a lot with them still in Texas.

Then, there's the downside.  My sister is still going to be living in Texas, so I still won't get to see her very often.  I have a lot of friends I'll be leaving behind in Texas, too (Shannon, Brownie, Jacob, Maggie, Bri, and the gang, I miss you all!), and I don't know when the next time is that I'll be down there  to say goodbye.  Plus, I may not even be able to say my final goodbyes to the house I spent eight years doing a lot of growing up in, and that's a total bummer, too.

Whatever happens, I've got to remember that change is good and if friends are true, they'll stick with you (I should write Hallmark cards, am I right? Just kidding).  This is going to be exciting and different and I can't wait for my parents to come here and finally feel settled and happy, and to feel like this is where they belong.

Plus, I really miss my mom's home cooked meals.  Just saying.

Au revoir,
Cooper

I'm having a hard time focusing.

There are a lot of things going through my head, and a lot of attractive college boys wandering through the halls of the library.

It's not my fault the internet works so well in here. And is so fast. And streams videos really quickly.

It's...not my fault.

Happy studying,

Cooper

Downtown Denver.

Wednesday, December 7, 2011 § 0

When I wrote that title, I accidentally wrote 'Downton' instead of 'downtown'.  I've got Downton Abbey on the brain!  God, I can't wait for the Christmas special.

ANYWAY... I went to the Denver Parade of Lights this weekend.

And then we went ice skating on Saturday....

Taking forever to put on my skates....

Colorado is such a beautiful place to live.

Happy holidays from me to you,
Cooper

P.S... here's a video originally for my family but here I am, sharing it with you.  Enjoy.

Horsetooth.

Sunday, November 6, 2011 § 0

Yesterday, me and some friends went down to Horsetooth mountain to go hiking.  My car barely made it up the steep roads, but once we got up there it was so worth it- the weather was perfect and the views were absolutely breathtaking!! I think I have a new goal to climb a 'fourteener'- or a 14,000 foot high mountain.  It's intense and you have to wear helmets and go with a guide, but I think it would be so satisfying at the end of the day.  Here are some shots from our hike:

Getting worn out?

With all the grafitti, of course someone would paint marijuana.  OF COURSE.  Damn hippies.

My favorite rock.

Teen angst.

Titanic pose.

LOVE these last two pictures.  Don't worry, the road was completely clear!

If you live in the Fort Collins area, you should definitely make a trip down to Horsetooth sometime.  It's worth it!  The only problem was that we went when all the snow was melting, and therefore my shoes are now caked in mud.  Great.

Happy Sunday,
Cooper

I was born to live here.

Wednesday, October 26, 2011 § 0

We had a freak snowstorm last night, and it's turned everything still and gorgeous....for example, take a look at the vid below (which is a complation of three vids I took: the first one is from last night, and the other two are from this morning.  I went a little crazy):

I love the snow. Can't you tell?

Throwback...

Tuesday, October 25, 2011 § 0

So I'm going to a murder mystery party on Friday, and we get to dress up.  There's actually a costume contest!  Because of this, me and my friends hit up the good ol' Goodwill and I found this little number:

It's an old fashioned, top-notch tam and I'm going to wear it with my costume.  I found this gorgeous, long yellow chiffon dress and a white knit shawl and it's going to be great.

I'll be sure to post pictures this Friday, for sure.

By the way, tomorrow it's supposed to snow 10 inches.  I love Colorado.

what I'm loving this week.

Sunday, October 16, 2011 § 1

I've noticed that I've been pretty scatterbrained recently...there's been so much going on that blogging has been pretty far down on my to-do list.  But right now it's one A.M., my roommate is gone, and I'm feeling like a late night.  Therefore, I shall blog!

I figure another installment of what I'm loving this week should brighten up Cooper Calamity's boring page.  Admittedly, it hasn't been too too bad, but I doubt you want to hear another rant about my homework or my week or anything like that.  In fact, let's just jump right in to what I'm loving.  Let's do that.

NUMERO UNO
This week's episode of Parks and Recreation.

Donna knows how to do it.  It was just a very hilarious episode and it's good that my roommate is away this weekend because I was laughing uproariously and it's quite late.  I would have woken her up....with all my laughter.....yes.  Okay.

NUMERO DEUX

This book.  Okay, so I haven't read it yet, but I bought it this week and I like that I did that because it has gotten rave reviews and they're making a movie of it with Emma Watson in it and I just can't deal with how awesome it all sounds.  I can't wait to crack open this puppy.

NUMMER TRE
This week's weather forecast.  I mean, 59?? I'm so excited; I want it to be cold with ALL OF MY HEART. I need to break out my fuzzy puffed coat.

QUATERNARIUS

The 2012 Volkswagen Beetle.  I WANT IT.  It's so beautiful and gorgeous and I would even give up my beloved wonderful-piece-of-junk Volvo for it.  THAT'S saying something.

Those are my loves for this week!  Let me know if you've got anything to add to the list.  Also, check out my new Life With Madi channel for the Collegian's vlog series here.

Until who knows when,
Cooper

My town is so cute.

Cafe Ardour.

SO good.  Garlic bagel with cream cheese and a cherry italian soda on the side.

Oh, my hair was a mess (I'm on the right, roomie's on the left) but I still had a lovely time in Old Town this labor day.  Coffee-shop hopping and reading and thrift store browsing was the perfect way to spend the Monday.

Hope your labor day was equally wonderful!

Arrivederci,
Cooper
